Fatal fight at Calgary McDonald’s sees accused charged with manslaughter

A Calgary man is now charged with manslaughter following a fight in a McDonald’s parking lot that proved fatal.

Kwok Leung Lau, 76, was injured in an altercation with another man in the 0-100 block of Crowfoot Way N.W. at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Police said when they arrived, both men “declined medical attention and further police involvement.”

Roughly 90 minutes later, police were called back to the location for reports of a man in medical distress.

The man in distress – Lau – was taken to hospital where he later died.

Chiu Man Yuen, 79, was charged with one count of aggravated assault prior to the victim’s death.

On Wednesday, police announced the charge had since been upgraded to manslaughter.

Lau’s death is Calgary’s 13th homicide of the year.

Investigators are asking anyone with information on the fight – specifically an individual who intervened in the altercation – to call them at 403-266-1234.
