Drugs, weapons found in stolen car during arrest of arson suspect: Calgary police

Calgary police have laid charges in connection with a blaze at a Bridlewood home earlier this month.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Bridlewood Avenue S.W. at roughly 3 a.m. on April 1.

The Calgary Police Service says its arson unit determined two people entered the backyard and “deliberately set fire” to the garage – and attempted to set fire to the home – before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

On Tuesday, police announced they had located the stolen vehicle and arrested a suspect.

A search of the vehicle resulted in the seizure of fentanyl, a shotgun and a hatchet.

“Clothing believed to be consistent with what was worn by one of the suspects at the time of the arson was also recovered,” police said.

The accused, a 49-year-old man, is charged with arson, possession of drugs and possession of stolen property.

Police say additional charges are pending because of the firearm found.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
