Driver killed in multi-vehicle crash on southern Alberta highway

RCMP say a southern Alberta man has died following a multi-vehicle crash south of Brooks.

The collision happened just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday in the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 873, near Rainer. Alta., roughly 180 kilometres southeast of Calgary.

Mounties say it appears a westbound van failed to stop at a stop sign, entering the intersection at a high rate of speed and hitting the trailer of a northbound semi-truck.

“The trailer of the semi-truck was pushed into the oncoming lane which led to a southbound SUV colliding with the trailer,” RCMP explained in a Wednesday news release.

The driver of the van, a 22-year-old male resident of Coaldale, Alta., was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old woman from the Vauxhall area, had to be extricated from her vehicle and was transported to hospital in stable condition with undetermined injuries.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

Traffic was detoured around the scene for approximately five hours.
