Officials with the Town of Banff say a dog caught on camera biting a deer has been designated as a “vicious animal” under the town’s bylaw.

A 39-second video of the attack was shared to Reddit on Sunday in the r/Banff subreddit.

In it, a woman in a black parka and black boots can be seen chasing after a light-coloured dog as it seemingly grips the mule deer’s antler in its mouth.

The woman can be seen attempting to separate the two animals multiple times.

Parks Canada said Wednesday it is aware of the incident and an investigation is underway, adding that the animal interaction happened on Feb. 18.

In a social media post on Thursday, the Town of Banff said it is working with Parks Canada on the investigation, and that the owner has “fully complied” with what has been asked of them since the investigation was launched, including “muzzling” to ensure “public and wildlife safety.”

“The ongoing investigation examines further requirements under law which includes the need to maintain control of a domesticated animal to prevent harassment, chasing or biting an animal, even when on leash,” said the Town of Banff.

“The incident serves as a reminder that dogs must be kept on leash at all times and they must remain under control when on leash to prevent harassment of other animals, or danger to the public.”

A second video of the incident, sent to CTV News by a viewer, shows several bystanders pull the dog off the deer, allowing it to get away.
