Cavalry FC fans will have to book a flight if they want to see their team play in a special match in February.

The Canadian Premier League club announced that its โ€œhome gameโ€ in the Concacaf Champions Cup against Orlando City SC canโ€™t be played at Spruce Meadows because even with a mild start to winter in Calgary, frost is already quite deep in the subsurface of the pitch.

So instead, Cavalry will play its home game at Starlight Stadium, the home of its CPL rivals Pacific FC in Langford, B.C. near Victoria.

โ€œWe are delighted to be representing the Canadian Premier League in the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup,โ€ the club said in a statement posted on its website Friday. โ€œIt seemed such a pipedream when we first kicked off in 2019.

โ€œAs the northernmost club in Concacaf, we are acutely aware of the possible risks that playing in February on natural grass may pose. We are, after all, more than 51 degrees north of the southernmost of the 41 members of Concacaf.โ€

The club said ticketing and schedule information will be released in early 2024. Late Friday afternoon, the club posted on its X feed, saying  that it will be arranging a travel package with flights, accommodations, and tickets for supportersโ€ making the trip to cheer Cavalry FC on in February.
