Parks Canada says an investigation is underway after a video was shared to Reddit showing a dog attacking a deer in Banff National Park.

The incident appears to have happened in the 500 block of Banff Avenue, outside the Moxy Banff hotel.

The 39-second video, shared to the r/Banff subreddit on Sunday, shows a woman in a black parka and black boots chasing after a light-coloured dog as it seemingly grips the mule deer’s antler in its mouth.

The woman can be seen attempting to separate the two animals multiple times.

In a statement to CTV News, Parks Canada said it is “aware of the recent incident” which happened on Feb 18.

“This serves as an important reminder for both residents and visitors to always keep dogs on a leash, under physical control at all times, and ensure that the animal does not chase, harass, bite or injure any person, other domestic animals or wildlife,” said a statement to CTV News.

“Not only is it the right thing to do, but it’s also the law. Leashing your pet isn’t just about their safety, it’s about protecting the wildlife that call this place home.

“Off-leash dogs can provoke defensive behavior from animals like bears, elk and deer or unintentionally harm smaller species. By keeping pets leashed, we help ensure the safety of both wildlife and our furry companions.”

As the investigation is ongoing, Parks Canada declined to provide more information in regard to whether or not officials had spoken with the dog owner, or if they’d be facing a fine or charges.
