Canucks erupt for 5 third period goals to stun Grande Prairie 6-4 to take two-game lead in AJHL Final

The Calgary Canucks saved the best for last Saturday night, scoring five third-period goals to come from behind against the Grande Prairie Storm, winning 6-4.

After suffering a 9-3 beatdown in the opening game of the AJHL final Friday night at Ken Bracko Arena, the Storm bounced back early Saturday, taking a 3-1 lead on goals from Max Algajer, and a pair from Colin Doherty, sandwiched around a Canuck marker from Jayden Joly.

In the third, however, the Canucks came out firing, getting four straight goals from Joly, Nolan Dupont, Kenny Sutton and Nathan Maloney with four and a half minutes remaining to take a 5-3 lead.

Grande Prairie got it back to a one-goal game on a goal from Max Leduc with a little over two minutes remaining, but Hayden Fletcher found the empty net with thirty-five seconds left to seal the win for the Canucks.

The victory gave Calgary a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven final, with the series heading to Grande Prairie for Games 3 and 4.

Grande Prairie outshot the Canucks 36-34.

Both clubs have already qualified for the 2025 Centennial Cup, which kicks off in Calgary on May 8.

Game 3 goes Tuesday night in Grande Prairie at 7 p.m.
