Calgary Transit is making changes after the first weekend of a pilot project that saw the number of CTrains cars reduced from three to two on weekends.
The pilot project, which launched March 22, was in response to reduced ridership on weekends.
Calgary Transit said except for during special events, weekends see an average of 84 CTrain passengers per trip.
Though that spikes to 300 people during busy periods, it’s still under the 400-person capacity of two train cars.
It was with this in mind that Calgary Transit moved to reduce the number of cars on Saturdays and Sundays, hoping to reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs.
However, on Thursday, Calgary Transit announced that they are now moving back to three-car CTrains on Saturdays, thanks to customer feedback and “real-time data.”
“This past weekend’s two-car train pilot launch gave us great insight to adjust our pilot and better match service with demand,” said Calgary Transit spokesperson Aaron Coon in a news release.
“Three car trains will be returned for Saturday to support busier periods and events taking place this weekend. Two-car trains will remain for Sunday.”
Calgary Transit will continue to monitor ridership and customer feedback for the rest of the pilot program.
