Calgary Firefighters Association wants ‘immediate consequences’ for speeders

Stoney Trail has a reputation for speeding drivers and dangerous manoeuvres. Local firefighters are renewing calls for the province to do something.

The Calgary Firefighters Association wants to see stronger consequences for drivers caught speeding excessively, particularly on Stoney Trail.

Association president Jamie Blayney says Stoney Trail has become a hot spot for dangerous driving.

“Our firefighters are often first on scene and witness first-hand the devastating impacts of stunt driving,” Blayney said. “We have seen these fatal incidents become more disastrous and more frequent.

“These incidents can rip families apart and often stay with first responders for the rest of their lives.”

In Alberta, if you are caught speeding 51 km/h or more over the limit, a mandatory court appearance is required, and fines are at the discretion of the court.

However, drivers are allowed to continue driving until their court appearances.

The association argues that in “every other province in Canada,” law enforcement has the power to either immediately impound a vehicle and/or suspend the licence of a driver caught speeding excessively.

“Excessive speeding is putting the lives of Calgarians and first responders at risk,” Blayney said.

Blayney says Alberta needs to “catch up to the rest of the country,” and is calling on Calgary’s new council to work with the province to introduce “immediate consequences” for drivers who choose to risk lives by driving dangerously.

Grim statistics

As of September, officers had issued 618 speeding tickets so far this year to drivers going 51 km/h or more over the limit.

That includes five in one night along Stoney Trail.

Police say there have been 27 fatal collisions so far in 2025, approximately 30 per cent of which involved unsafe or excessive speed.
