Alberta braces for its first spring storm of the season

Published:

A special weather statement for central Alberta has been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada as a messy mix of rain and snow pushes into the province late Wednesday.

This wet weather event is made up of multiple parts.

An upper low pressure system on the U.S. west coast is working together with the jet stream to steer a significant amount of water vapour from the ocean through the northern states and into Western Canada.

This warm and wet air mass will clash with Alberta’s relatively cooler, drier air to produce the spring storm conditions that will start making an impact early Thursday during the morning commute, especially for regions north of Calgary.

Now that we are aware of what’s on the way, let’s focus on what’s in store for Calgary.

The city is currently not involved in the special weather statement and likely won’t be heading into tomorrow.

Today, there is a chance for some scattered showers throughout the morning. The afternoon is set to be mostly cloudy with a high of 9 C.

On Thursday morning, Calgary could start seeing a rain/snow mix as early as 7 a.m. turning into wet snow as the afternoon progresses with a high of 6 C.

Temperatures will continue to cool heading into Friday with a below seasonal high of -1 C and clouds that could produce some flurries in the evening.

Not much change over the weekend, Saturday could have some morning flurries and a cloudy afternoon at -1 C.

We start to rally on Sunday with a high of 4 C and cloudy with some sunny breaks.
