Nearly 20,000 Toyota vehicles recalled in Canada due to risk of rear doors opening while driving

Toyota has recalled nearly 20,000 vehicles in Canada, for risk of rear doors opening while driving, posing a risk of injury.

“On certain vehicles, water could leak into the rear door handle and cause the door opener switch to short circuit. If this happens, the rear door could open unexpectedly while driving,” the updated notice by Transport Canada says.

The affected models are:

• Toyota Prius, model years 2023 to 2026
• Toyota Prius Prime, model years 2023 to 2026

Toyota recommends that consumers enable the automatic door locking function through the vehicle’s head unit to reduce the risk of the rear door opening while driving.

Additionally, the carmaker will advise owners by mail to take the vehicle to a dealership to modify the rear door switch circuits.

According to the notice, this recall is an expansion of Transport Canada recall no. 2024-228 for the same issue.

Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair, the notice adds.

Earlier this week, thousands of Toyota Tundra trucks were recalled due to a rear-view camera issue.

“Under certain conditions, a software problem could cause the rear-view camera image to freeze or not to display when the transmission is shifted into reverse,” Transport Canada said on its website.

In addition to that, Toyota issued a similar recall last October, for rear-view cameras on Tundra and Sequoia models impacting more than 32,000 vehicles in Canada.
