A portion of Yonge Street in Barrie’s south end will be closed for a short period due to deep sanitary sewer installation. From Tues., July 14 to Fri., July 17, Yonge Street will be blocked to traffic from St. Paul’s Crescent to Mapleview Drive East. The City of Barrie says the closure that spans the three days will have crews working 24 hours in order to keep the construction timeline short and limit impacts to drivers. During the closure, traffic will be redirected on a detour where drivers will be diverted to St. Paul’s Crescent to get to Mapleview Drive East or Yonge Street. The City reminds motorists to expect delays, plan ahead and follow the signs posted. Public transit will be unaffected by the closure. The work being done is part of a larger transportation plan by the City that recognizes the major road as a “key corridor needed to support growth to 2031.” The plan includes widening Yonge Street between Mapleview Drive East and Lockhart Road to five lanes, and reconstructing it so it has a cycling lane and sidewalk.
