For a third straight day, VIA Rail trains are not moving through Simcoe County and the Parry Sound district because of a freight derailment in northern Ontario.
It was late Saturday night when a CN freight train derailed about 80 km south of Timmins, on the same railroad that runs through Parry Sound, Torrance, Washago, Brechin and Beaverton.
That line is the only railroad serving VIA trains between Winnipeg and Toronto, and VIA makes regular stops in both Parry Sound and Washago.
In a news release Tuesday afternoon, a VIA Rail spokesperson said it’s not clear how long the closure will last.
CN crews remain on the site of the derailment, cleaning up the extensive damage from the weekend incident. CN issued no updates on Tuesday morning as to when the railroad might be back in service.
The derailment site is in a remote area and is not accessible by road, which has made the cleanup process difficult.
VIA says it has been getting in touch with customers who had reservations on the affected trains, to help them make alternate arrangements or cancel their bookings.
