Teen charged with armed robbery at Barrie high school granted bail following second hearing

One of three teens charged after police said a gun was used earlier this month during a robbery inside a Barrie high school has been granted bail.

The 15-year-old had initially been denied bail by a justice of the peace but was released from custody following a second hearing. He is one of three Barrie high school students charged with armed robbery involving a gun Feb. 2 at Maple Ridge Secondary School that prompted the school to be placed under a 90-minute lockdown.

The accused, whose identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, cannot be identified and is charged with several weapons counts, including robbery using a loaded firearm. Police confirmed a handgun was found.

The teen, along with two others, 16 and 17 years of age, was arrested three weeks ago when Barrie Police said the south Barrie high school along Mapleview Drive East was placed under lockdown and hold and secure following reports of a gun inside the school.

Barrie police said officers were called to the school at about 9:30 a.m., prompting the lockdown, preventing anyone from entering or leaving the school as police searched for suspects in the alleged armed robbery.

The 16-year-old was released from custody hours later, while the 17-year-old walked out of the Barrie courthouse following a bail hearing the following day when his mother pledged $5000 to get him out under strict conditions.

The accused returns to court next month. The allegations against them have not been tested in court.
