Suspect ran but could not hide from Grey Bruce OPP

An attempt to flee from Provincial Police initially worked for one driver but later resulted in the arrest of three people and a number of charges against them.

The arrest happened on June 4, days after a suspect fled from a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) check.

Grey Bruce OPP say around 1 a.m. on May 19, officers were conducting RIDE checks at the 10th Concession and Grey Road 18 in the municipality of Meaford.

During the enforcement effort, the driver of one vehicle was determined to be in breach of court-imposed conditions by officers, who then attempted to arrest him.

OPP say the suspect evaded arrest.

Just over two weeks later, on June 4, an investigation into the matter led the Grey Bruce Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), Repeat Offender Parole Enforcement (ROPE) unit, OPP West Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), West Region OPP Canine Unit and OPP Aviation Unit to a residence in the Township of Chatsworth.

The suspect attempted to flee again from authorities, police say, this time attempting to steal a vehicle, which was then struck by a police cruiser.

OPP say the suspect then took off on foot but was taken into custody a short while later after being pursued by officers. Two more individuals were arrested inside the stolen vehicle. Police also claim to have seized a .22 calibre bolt-action rifle during the arrest.

During the dramatic arrest, two officers suffered minor injures.

In total, three suspects now face several charges.

A 24-year-old Owen Sound man, an 18-year-old from Kincardine and a 36-year-old South Bruce Peninsula man have been charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and more.
