Wasaga Beach unveils renderings of its very first high school.

After years of advocacy, Wasaga Beach is set to welcome its first high schools, with both Catholic and public secondary facilities planned to accommodate the growing community.

The Town of Wasaga Beach provided a preview of what its first high school will look like when it opens to support more than 1,000 secondary students.

The state-of-the-art facility will feature a child care facility, two gymnasiums - one for elementary students and one for secondary students - an upgraded sports field, and a theatre that will be available to students during the day and open to the community during evenings and weekends.

The province committed $57.7 million to build the new Catholic school, which is expected to open in 2027.

A public secondary school is slated to follow in 2029, with $59 million in funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education. The public high school will be located at Sunnidale Road South and Sun Valley Avenue and have space for more than 1,100 students.

The Town says the need for high schools is crucial, with roughly 1,000 secondary students living in Wasaga Beach currently being bused to neighbouring communities. It notes it is also the largest community in Ontario without a high school.

The beachfront town is one of the fastest growing communities in the province, with its population expected to double by 2051.
