The province’s police watch dog says it’s investigating the death of a man who was involved in an exchange of gunfire with police in cottage country.

The actions of officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are being reviewed by the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) after a 60-year-old man from Minden Hills died Sunday evening.

The SIU issued a press release stating police were called to check the well-being of a man who had left his property with a firearm.

The agency says officers arrived to the property on Gelert Road in the area of Highway 1 and Highway 17, and there was an exchange of gunfire between an officer and a man situated in some bushes.

Police approached the man and determined he was dead. The SIU says his fatal injury was found to be self-inflicted.

Three investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is an independent government agency consisting of civilians who investigate incidents involving police that result in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
