After being injured in an encounter with a porcupine up north, a wild red fox is slowly on his path to recovery.

The young fox was discovered on the side of Brunel Road in Huntsville with a face full of porcupine quills and exhibiting unusually calm behavior—a sign that something wasn’t right.

Concerned for his well-being, the person who found the little guy brought him directly to a local sanctuary up north to receive immediate care and attention.

Staff at Aspen Valley Sanctuary in Rosseau, quickly jumped into action. Volunteers say the young fox received oxygen therapy, pain medication, and cage rest to help stabilize him.

They also said an X-ray revealed no head trauma, but there are signs he may have been struck by a vehicle, sustaining some injuries to his back end.

Despite the rough state he arrived in, caregivers say the fox is showing resilience and strength as he recovers. “He’s doing well and proving to be quite the fighter,” a staff member shared. “We’re hopeful this brave little fox will soon be ready to return to the wild where he belongs.”

Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary continues to provide care for injured and orphaned wildlife across the region, and encounters like this highlight the importance of keeping a watchful eye on our wild roadside friends.
