Equipment malfunction caused power outage to thousands in Barrie

A large swath of Barrie was without hydro on Tuesday morning.

More than 3,210 residents and businesses were left in the dark as of 9:47 a.m. Tuesday.

The outage impacted homes and businesses from Miller Drive to St. Vincent Street and Livingstone Street West to Dunlop Street West.

“The estimated restoration is between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cause has been identified as an equipment malfunction,” said Ashley Trgachef with Alectra.

Alectra announced shortly before 1 p.m. that power had been restored. Anyone without power should contact 1-833-ALECTRA.

During an outage residents are encourage to avoid downed power lines and report them to Alectra or local authorities, use flashlights instead of candles to reduce fire risk, and keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to preserve food.
