OPP lay 72 charges during ATV Safety Week

A number of central Ontario All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders found themselves on the receiving end of a ticket during the first week of June.

From June 1 to June 7, provincial police embarked on ATV Safety Week, during which the OPP’s Snow Vehicle, ATV, Vessel Enforcement/Education (SAVE) unit, along with officers from 13 detachments, conducted what police call “coordinated enforcement and education initiatives” along various trails in the region.

Police stopped riders to check proper helmet use, screen for alcohol and ensure riders were otherwise following the Highway Traffic Act.

In total, police issued 72 charges, including dangerous driving, lack of insurance, missing documentation, improper helmet use, equipment deficiencies and unsafe operation.

Police also issued 70 warnings.
