Midland residents are being advised by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) that an icebreaker ship will be operating in the southern Georgian Bay area early next week.
The CCG says the CCGS Amundsen will be carrying out icebreaking operations to allow commercial vessels to move safely and efficiently. The operations are scheduled for around the time of Tuesday, March 25.
Ice traffic, including pedestrians, fishers, snowmobilers and all-terrain vehicle operators, are advised by the CCG to leave the ice during the operations.
The CCG says the ice will remain unstable even after the icebreaker has left the area, therefore, ice activities should be planned with extreme caution.
The CCG collaborates with the United States Coast Guard to ensure that vessel traffic can move through shipping channels in and out of community harbours.
According to VesselFinder.com, the CCGS Amundsen was in the Saint Lawrence River near Trois-Rivières, Que. on Friday afternoon.
The exact timing of icebreaking operations depend on their operational requirements and weather conditions.
