Lengthy road closure scheduled as construction progresses on Barrie transit hub

Construction on the Barrie Allandale Transit Terminal (formerly the Allandale Transit Mobility Hub) and Downtown Mini Hub is moving forward, with a lengthy road closure on tap to facilitate ongoing site activities.

To complete road modification as part of the project, there will be one-way northbound traffic only along Maple Avenue starting Mon., April 14 through to May 16. While buses will be detoured, pedestrian access won’t be impacted, the City says. Then from May 12 to May 16, there will be a full closure of Maple Avenue from Simcoe Street to south of the 15 Maple Condominium parking garage entrance.

The Downtown Mini Hub will have bus stops and sheltered waiting areas on Maple Avenue. "These bus stops will maintain downtown transit service levels and provide direct access routes to and from the downtown," the City states.

Construction crews continue work at the Barrie Allandale Transit Terminal, with structural steel installation, block work, masonry, window framing and drywall installation underway. The hub located along Essa Road and Gowan Street will enhance access across Simcoe County, Muskoka and the GTA.

During construction, access will remain open to the GO Train, vehicle pick-up and drop-off areas, and the pedestrian tunnel at Gowan Street.

The project is funded by the federal and provincial governments, with the City fronting the remaining 26 per cent of the cost. Features of the new terminal will include express bus stops, covered bike shelters, and improved pedestrian access. The City says the design will reflect the historic character of the nearby Allandale train station, while providing emergency backup power to ensure continued services during outages.
