Dozens of members of the Innisfil community gathered at Legion 547 to remember those who have served for our country. The legion has focused on youth as part of the process. Mehdi Imtiaz serves as the poppy chair for Legion 547 and said the ceremony involved youth from various groups including cadets and scouts. “Our goal here is to slowly get them into the planning stage of this so that they are actually planning it and executing the actual ceremony, because there’s a lot more when they’re actually involved in it, as opposed to just standing there and watching it,” said Imtiaz. Adding its the legions job to make sure the younger generation is engaged. “It’s our job now to make sure that the kids are interested so that as they get older that they are the ones that say, I want to go to, that I want to attend that,” said Imtiaz. “And as our seniors are getting older here and our veterans are getting older you might have seen that what we’ve done here is we have the veterans standing still and everybody else, the audience, the parents, we get everybody to march and they participate because they’re the ones that they’re moving.” After the ceremony outdoors, it was moved inside where prayers, song and the names of those who have fallen were honoured.
