Another municipality is biting back at U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs by prioritizing Canadian goods and services.
Similar to the move made in Barrie and other areas, Newmarket councillors voted to support the local economy by standing behind Canadian businesses.
“In addition to buying from Newmarket companies, we also need to support items made in and across Canada,” stated Mayor John Taylor. “We know this may get difficult and challenging, but Newmarket and Canada are strong, and we will stand strong together.”
The Town announced it would increase its procurement bylaw thresholds to allow for local companies to be awarded contracts for town projects.
The Town will also bring back the Business Assistance Concierge, which was introduced during the pandemic, to help connect impacted businesses to available government resources.
Residents are encouraged to shop local rather than online, and to look for the ‘Made in Canada’ label when purchasing items.
