Provincial police patrolling along Highway 427 conducted a traffic stop on Monday night after allegedly clocking a vehicle speeding excessively in the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane.
According to Aurora OPP, the vehicle was heading northbound at Langstaff Road at 198 kilometres per hour in the HOV lane, nearly double the posted limit.
The 24-year-old driver from Vaughan was charged with stunt driving, which is an automatic charge for motorists speeding 50 kilometres per hour or more in an area with a posted speed limit of 80 or higher.
The offense carries an immediate 30-day licence suspension and 14-day vehicle impoundment at the registered owner’s expense.
Police noted the accused was also charged with other violations, but did not specify.
HOV lanes are restricted to vehicles with at least one passenger.
