Bradford kidnapping trial begins with complainant testifying how he escaped

The two men are alleged to have beaten and held a man captive prior to his escape.

The complainant in a horrifying Nov. 2023 assault and kidnapping in Bradford took the witness stand Monday afternoon in the trial of Rashaan Monlouis of Innisfil and Targe Mooroe of Toronto.

Monlouis and Mooroe are accused of beating up and robbing the man inside a Bradford drug house before taking him to another location where he eventually escaped, according to police.

The man, who is now in his mid 30s, told the court after being assaulted he had his Jeep taken from him along with his wallet and phone.

The complainant said the terrifying ordeal started when he made plans to meet up with a woman named Mandy to get high. The complainant told the court of his long-standing addiction to cocaine and struggles with anxiety and depression.

Upon arriving to meet the woman, the complainant said he was quickly confronted by two men telling the man he wasn’t allowed to be at the home.

He testified the men cooled off and left the home when Mandy stepped in.

The complainant told the court he later left the home to buy alcohol for Mandy and when he returned, he said the two men rushed him and started assaulting him. He later identified the accused in court, saying they did not have masks on. A short while later he remembered being drugged and taken to a second location nearby.

The man said he was taken away in the back seat of another car and that his Jeep was driven by someone else.

“I was afraid,” he told the court. He recalled being held against his will, forced to take crack cocaine overnight. He testified seeing his captors had a gun, thinking to himself “How am I going to get out of here?”

He told the court he waited for his captor to fall asleep that night and escaped the home when he ran to a nearby business and called 911.

He was taken to hospital in an ambulance. Police charged the accused with robbery, forcible confinement, uttering death threats, and kidnapping.

Another man, Ryan Kempton, pleaded guilty and was sentenced earlier this year for his role in the alleged kidnapping.

The two-week trial continues Tuesday.
