Bracebridge approves bylaws to bring housing in place of former Memorial Arena site

The town of Bracebridge has approved a housing project in the area where the Memorial Arena once stood.

The area was demolished in 2024 after serving as the community’s hockey hub for over 75 years and on Thursday, the town announced its approval of the zoning by-laws that will allow for new homes to be built.

The proposed development will bring 100 new housing units, split amongst two buildings on the 1.48 acre area.

Each building will require a minimum of 25 per cent of its units to qualify as affordable housing. The buildings are set to accommodate an estimated 175 to 200 residents.

The project is to be completed by Greystone Project Management Inc., in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North and the District Municipality of Muskoka.

One building would be owned and operated by the District Municipality of Muskoka, while the second would be owned and operated by Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North, according to the town.

The town says there are a few more steps before construction can begin, such as detailed design, site plan approval, engineering review and completion of required agreements, therefore a timeline on construction has not yet been set.
