There are fewer drivers on the road now that summer's over, but get ready for more congestion on the Malahat.

Starting the day after Thanksgiving Monday, the busy highway will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Aspen Road and Shawnigan Lake Road.

It will remain in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week until the May long weekend in 2018.

Crews will be performing blasting work that was delayed over the summer due to a number of complaints from motorists.

Drivers should expect intermittent traffic stoppages of up to 20 minutes during construction and will be subject to a 60 km/h speed limit in the area.

Current conditions of the highway can be checked on Drive BC's website

The construction is part of a $34-million safety upgrade is underway to widen a five-kilometre stretch of the route from two lanes to four.
