Two arrested for impaired driving after car crashes in front of P.E.I. RCMP detachment

Two people were arrested for impaired driving after a car crashed in front of an RCMP detachment in Cornwall, P.E.I., Thursday night.

Queens District RCMP responded to the single-vehicle crash, which police say “occurred directly in front” of the detachment just before 7 p.m.

Police found one vehicle in the ditch and a second vehicle at the scene, though the vehicle in the ditch was the only one involved in the collision.

The drivers of both vehicles were arrested for impaired driving by alcohol. No one was seriously injured.

“Having two impaired drivers arrested at a single vehicle crash is exceptionally rare— and for it to happen directly in front of a police detachment is remarkable,” said Cpl. Gavin Moore, media relations officer for the P.E.I. RCMP.

Police say each driver provided a breath sample; one registered readings of 320 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, while the other registered 180 mg per 100 ml of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

Both drivers were kept in cells and released once they were sober.

They are due to appear in court at a later date.

Third driver arrested

Roughly one hour later, just before 8 p.m., Prince District RCMP received several reports of an erratic driver in Borden-Carleton.

Police arrested the 37-year-old man for impaired driving by alcohol. They say he provided breath samples over 300 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.

“Impaired driving is a major contributor to serious collisions and fatalities on PEI roadways,” said the RCMP. “Breath sample results like those seen in these investigations are extremely high and pose a significant danger to the public.”
