Public health office warns of blue-green algae bloom in P.E.I.

Prince Edward Island’s chief public health office warned Islanders of a blue-green algae bloom in a Friday news release.

The bloom in Parson’s Creek, Stanhope, may form a “scum” on the surface of lakes or ponds. Blue-green algae can cause nausea, vomiting, sore throat, diarrhea or abdominal cramps, said the release.

Pet owners are advised to keep animals aways from Parson’s Creek so they do not drink the water. Ingesting blue-green algae can be fatal for dogs.

The office will monitor the situation and advise the public when the advisory is lifted, said the release.
