P.E.I. announces new support in organ donation process

Prince Edward Island is announcing new funding to support Island families through the organ donation process.

The province is introducing an organ and tissue donation liaison who will work with partner organizations and families.

Minister of Health and Wellness Cory Deagle has signed a proclamation honouring Brodie McCarthy, a Grade 12 student from Montague who died after sustaining head injuries during a rugby tournament in 2018.

“The proclamation recognizes the lasting impact of his organ donation and encourages Islanders to register as donors,” reads a news release from the province.

“In the midst of this profound loss, the McCarthy family made the selfless decision to consent to organ donation, resulting in five lives being saved,” says Deagle.

Brodie’s mother, Lisa McCarthy, says organ and tissue donation is the ultimate way to pay it forward.

“It’s a decision that can save many lives and provide a second chance to those who need it most,” she says.

The province notes donating organs like hearts, livers, pancreas, small bowels, kidneys and lungs can save lives.

Donating tissues like skin, bone, tendons, corneas, eyes and heart valves can also enhance the life of someone who has been burned or has vision and mobility issues.

This announcement comes during National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week, a campaign running until Saturday to raise awareness about the need for more organ and tissue donors in Canada.

Canadians can register their intent to donate organs and tissues after death if they have a health card and are 16 or older.

In P.E.I., there are currently over 80,980 Islanders registered on the Intent to Donate Registry, according to the province.

“Brodie’s legacy was the gift of life. We encourage you to start your own legacy today by registering to become an organ and tissue donor,” says Lisa McCarthy.
