Ottawa and Prince Edward Island are spending $1.7 million on a massive cold storage facility in Summerside that is expected to support the province’s agriculture and seafood sectors. The 25,000-square-foot Seaside Cold Storage facility is under development at the Port of Summerside’s Marine Terminal, according to a news release. Once complete, the site will offer roughly 3,000 pallet positions for food products, frozen seafood and ingredients. The facility will also feature three separate temperature-controlled storage rooms. “By increasing the availability of modern frozen storage capacity, we are helping Island businesses strengthen their supply chains, improve operational flexibility, and create new opportunities for growth across the agriculture, seafood, and food processing industries,” said Thane Smallwood, president of Summerside Port Corporations Inc., in the release. The federal government, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, is contributing $1 million in non-repayable loans to the project, along with $500,000 in repayable funding.
