Wreath-laying ceremony in Halifax honours the 35th anniversary of Persian Gulf War

A wreath laying ceremony was held in Halifax to mark the end of the Persian Gulf War, 35 years ago.

A wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Fairview Legion Thursday morning to mark the 35th anniversary of the end of the Persian Gulf War.

The ceremony honoured the approximate 4,000 veterans of Operation Friction, the Canadian contribution to the 1991 U.S. led war in the Persian Gulf.

Canada was a part of a 35-country coalition to help remove invading Iraqi forces from neighbouring Kuwait.

“It means a lot to have the support of all Canadians, which we certainly did while we were there. It was evident by all the letters which were sent to us by children, by families,” said Veteran Doug Saunders, who attended the ceremony.

The ceremonies will conclude on Saturday at the CFB Halifax dockyard, where a CP-140 Aurora is scheduled to conduct a fly over the Halifax Harbour at approximately 9:30 a.m., with a Royal Canadian Navy sail past to mirror the homecoming of Canadian Forces personnel returning from the Persian Gulf War.
