Two men charged for allegedly cashing $290K in stolen cheques in Amherst, N.S.: police

Two men have been charged in Amherst, N.S., for allegedly cashing thousands of dollars in stolen cheques.

The Amherst Police Department said investigators first received a tip about a potential fraud being committed on Jan. 9. Police said it was reported that people were in possession of stolen cheques, and they had been cashing them at a local financial institution.

According to police, the alleged fraud was in excess of $290,000.

Police arrested two suspects on Tuesday.

Police said Hardeep Singh, 45, and Inderpal Singh, 36, both of Amherst, were charged with fraud exceeding $5,000 and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

The two were scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing on Friday.
