Truro, N.S., begins controlled deer hunt program, runs until mid-December

The Town of Truro announced Friday its annual Controlled Urban Deer Hunt program is now underway and will run until mid-December.

The hunt program is part of the town’s larger deer management strategy to reduce the deer population in Truro, N.S. The Town of Truro said the benefits of reduced deer populations are natural ecosystems, citizen landscapes, reducing deer vehicle collisions, public health concerns, the possible presence of deer predators and an overall reduction of deer-human conflict.

This is the fifth year for the program. More than 100 deer have been harvested through the program since it began.

“The program is designed to balance ecological needs and community safety and is executed under the strict guidance and permitting of the NS Department of Natural Resources,” a post from the town reads.

The program is partnered with:

• Millbrook First Nation
• Dalhousie University
• Feed Nova Scotia
• Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources

The deer harvested through the program are donated to Feed Nova Scotia each year and distributed throughout the province.

Additional deer harvested through Millbrook First Nation is donated to the Millbrook community members.

“The program operates on as little waste as possible. As part of the program, all hides are also donated to Millbrook First Nation. Other parts of the animal are also used for Provincial and National research purposes, both through the NS Department of Natural Resources and Dalhousie University,” the post continues.

The town is also asking residents to help reduce the population by not feeding deer within and around Truro.
