Transit Cape Breton launching mobile payment app this month

Tap-and-pay will be operating on Cape Breton transit in two weeks.

Transit Cape Breton is getting rid of paper tickets as it launches a mobile payment app later this month.

Riders will be able to pay with the “Umo” app starting June 15. The Cape Breton Regional Municipality says the new system will simplify transit with a flat fare of $2.50.

“This is a major modernization of public transit in Cape Breton Regional Municipality,” said Mayor Cecil Clarke in a news release. “Whether you ride every day or are trying transit for the first time, the new system is designed to make using transit simple, flexible and convenient.”

People can also buy reloadable transit cards for $10 at city hall at 320 Esplanade. Funds can then be added online or in person at city hall.

Riders can also tap a debit or credit card to pay for a bus fare.

The municipality says it will be eliminating fare zones and paper tickets. Existing transit tickets will be accepted until Dec. 31.
