‘The greatest thing’: Halifax’s ‘Donair Beast’ shines spotlight on city’s official dish

Donair Beast is working on a documentary so the world can learn about Halifax’s official food.

Corey Good, locally known as the “Donair Beast,” has made it his mission to make donairs a global phenomenon.

“I love donairs. I eat them all the time, and I think donairs should have a world platform. They should be sold all over the world,” says Good.

“They are what’s known as a wet sandwich. I know it doesn’t sound the best, but they are actually delicious. There’s nothing better than a donair at 2 a.m., after you’ve had a couple beers, especially in Dartmouth or Halifax.”

His love and passion for what’s considered Halifax’s official dish has led him to star in an upcoming documentary titled “Donairfest.”

It will explore the history, cultures and community surrounding the Halifax donair.

“What people can expect with this documentary is absolutely everything you need to know about a donair. The story, where it came from, who made it, who taught people how to make it,” says Good.

“It’s a great story. I get to the depths of it. I go deep and I discover who really made the donair and once people watch this documentary, I have a feeling donairs are going to pop up all over the world.”

The documentary is set to be released next year.

In the meantime, Good is shining the spotlight here at home, with an upcoming donair competition.

“The event is the best four donair companies in town. They’re going to compete for the number one spot in the world. Best donair ever. We got King of Donair, we got Tony’s World Famous Pizza and Donairs. We got Revana’s Pizza and we got Sasy’s Pizza. They’re all going head-to-head Saturday, Feb. 28th, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.,” he says.

The free event will be held at Stagger’s Pub and Grub in downtown Dartmouth.

“We need to get this out to the world. I think the whole world should know what a donair is and should taste a donair and make their own donair,” says Good.

“It is the greatest thing ever created.”
