Safety upgrades coming to intersections throughout Halifax Regional Municipality

The Halifax Regional Municipality is upgrading 65 intersections to high-visibility zebra crosswalks.

The upgrades are part of a goal to transform all signaled intersections to zebra crosswalks in support of the Road Safety Strategy, said a news release.

The municipality adopted the use of zebra crosswalks in 2024 after conducting an evaluation of their efficacy.

Upgrades will be implemented over several years, said the release.

The zebra upgrades will replace existing rainbow crosswalks at eight intersections this year since the enhancements cannot accommodate multiple graphics.

New rainbow crosswalks will be painted at alternated locations where feasible in recognition of the “symbolic importance of rainbow crosswalks, particularly during Pride Month,” said the release.

The municipality said rainbow and Pan-African designs remain part of the municipality’s commitment to celebrating and including diverse communities.

Residents should expect delays at the following locations while upgrades take place in coming weeks:

• Spring Garden Road and Queen Street
• Agricola and North streets
• Barrington and Sackville streets
• Lacewood and Thomas Raddall drives
• Gottingen and Nora Bernard streets
• Quinpool Road and Vernon Street
• Quinpool Road and Harvard Street
• Near 6206 Quinpool Rd.
