Ride for Cancer postponed due to Nova Scotia burn ban and forest restrictions

Crystal Garrett gets details on the short postponement of this year's Ride for Cancer.

This year’s Ride for Cancer has been rescheduled for Oct. 18th because of the provincewide burn ban and forest restrictions in Nova Scotia.

Ride for cancer co-chair Catherine Campbell said it was important to make the change in date now and not wait to see if the current restrictions are lifted.

“The fire ban means no one can be on the trail and although not everyone is on the trail for Ride for Cancer, probably three quarters of the people do go on the trail. We had to make the decision now because it is a big event that does require a lot of planning and a lot of moving parts,” said Campbell in an interview with CTV Morning Live’s Crystal Garrett on Friday.

Campbell added that regardless of any changes to the restrictions before the original date, the event will happen on Oct. 18th. She said the change will also give extra time for people to get involved and donate.

“It’s a community of people who have come together to rise money, in fact over the last 11 years we have raised $13 million for cancer care right here in our region. We come together to ride and start in Bayers Lake. There are different distances on the road and on the trails,” she said.

“To know I am part of a group of people, a community that comes together and it’s not just the people who are organizing it or participating and funding, it’s also the people who are donating. So that makes up the community that makes this all possible and has helped us to create this incredible space at the QEII where we have the equipment, technology and the space to combat cancer.”
