N.S. man charged with sex assault, child luring after alleged Snapchat exchanges

An RCMP investigation led to charges against a man who was allegedly exchanging sexually explicit pictures with a minor via Snapchat, said a Friday news release.

The man allegedly travelled to the Lloydminster, Alta., to commit further sexual offences.

Travis James Birt, 29, of Nova Scotia is charged with:

• sexual assault
• sexual interference
• child luring
• possession of child pornography
• making sexually explicit material available to a child.

Police said they received a complaint about the shared images on March 18.

Lloydminster RCMP identified the suspect when it took over the investigation, said the release.

Birt, from P.E.I., was living in Ontario when the alleged Snapchat exchange started, said police. Police said they learned he was living in Nova Scotia and RCMP obtained a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on May 27.

Birt was brought before a justice of the peace and taken into custody. He will appear before the Saskatchewan Provincial Court on June 9.

Sgt. Nutbrown of the Lloydminster RCMP said it released Birt’s image in hopes that other potential victims will come forward.
