Ontario man arrested in Cape Breton with $90K worth of illegal tobacco

The Cape Breton Regional Police arrested an Ontario man and seized unstamped tobacco valued at roughly $90,000 as part of an ongoing investigation last week.

Officers spotted a vehicle believed to be transporting unstamped tobacco on Feb. 27, according to a police news release. Working with the RCMP, officers stopped it on Highway 4 of the Ben Eoin area.

Police arrested the driver and seized roughly $30,000 in cash and 87 cases of unstamped tobacco after they searched the vehicle and several storage units.

Matthew John Peters, 44, was charged with:

-possession of property obtained by crime

-laundering proceeds of crime

-possession for the purpose of sale of unstamped tobacco
