N.S. man faces multiple charges after allegedly fleeing police twice

A man from Nine Mile River, N.S., is charged with multiple offences after allegedly fleeing the police in two separate incidents.

Justin Oakley, 23, is charged with flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation in relation to the incident.

He is also charged with the following in relation to an incident in Barrington Passage, N.S., on May 27:

• flight from peace officer (two counts)
• dangerous operation
• assault with a weapon

On May 29, officers attempted to stop a grey Honda Civic that was operating without a licence plate on Highway 103 near Chester Basin, said a news release. When the officer activated his emergency lights and sirens, the driver allegedly increased their speed.

The officer deactivated his emergency equipment and ended the pursuit “in the interest of public safety,” said the release.

The vehicle was then observed driving west in the eastbound lane of Highway 103.

RCMP dispatched additional officers and Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources deployed air services.

Police learned the man was wanted in connection with a Shelburne RCMP investigation and there was a passenger in the car.

Police located Oakley and the youth passenger outside the vehicle near Oakland Road at approximately 1:15 p.m. and arrested him.

No one was physically injured.

Shelburne District RCMP conducted a traffic stop on a grey Honda Civic with no licence plate at approximately 8:49 p.m. on May 27, said the release.

The car pulled over but when the officer opened his door to exit his vehicle, the car backed up toward him, then drove away. The officer did not pursue in the interest of public safety.

Oakley appeared in Bridgewater provincial court on May 30. He was released on conditions and will appear in court again on July 9.
