Nova Scotia adds 110 beds to stand-alone transitional health centre in Bedford

Nova Scotia is expanding its first-ever stand-alone transitional health centre.

Nova Scotia is adding 110 beds to the province’s first stand-alone transitional health centre in Bedford.

West Bedford Transitional Health, which opened in December 2024, is expanding with a new wing that is expected to help more patients transition from hospital to home.

“By expanding transitional care, we’re helping reduce emergency wait times and capacity pressures across our healthcare system by freeing up hospital beds,” said Dr. Nicole Boutilier, acting president and CEO of Nova Scotia Health, in a news release. “West Bedford Transitional Health will ensure patients receive the right level of care in a setting designed for their needs, improving their recovery and helping them safely return home sooner.”

The facility, operated by Shannex, offers 178 suites, two large rehabilitation gyms and four transition-to-home apartments.

Patients at West Bedford Transitional Health can receive one-on-one support from physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, dietitians and nursing teams.

The province says the facility has saved more than 27,000 acute care bed days and is expected to save the system $1.3 billion over its contract.
