Maritime non-profits feeling the impact of gas prices

Fuel prices dropped in Nova Scotia on the weekend.

Drivers have gotten a bit of a break at the gas pumps. Gas in Nova Scotia dropped 6.7 cents per litre over the weekend, but not-for-profit groups are still feeling the pinch.

People in the Sydney, N.S. area started their week with a litre of regular self-serve costing 180.6. That’s down nearly seven cents per litre.

Similar drops have been seen provincewide.

However, even with a slight break in fuel prices, Chester Borden, the executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Breton in Whitney Pier, N.S., said their 24-passenger bus may have to remain parked more often this spring and summer.

“Filling that thing up the other day, it was over $200,” Borden said on Monday.

“So that’s a big impact. I guess that will limit our trips, especially during our summer program coming up where we do a lot of field trips to the beaches. We go up to Chéticamp camping. So, I guess we’re like everybody else, we’ll have to start monitoring our trips.”

Osborne Burke of Victoria Co-operative Fisheries in Neil’s Harbour, N.S., told CTV Atlantic on Monday it’s costing about $1,000 more on average to send a truckload of Cape Breton lobster to market in Boston.

Gas prices went down across the Maritime provinces over the weekend.

On P.E.I., regular self-serve gasoline decreased by 3.5 cents with the minimum now 190.2. For New Brunswick, regular self-serve didn’t change but the price of diesel decreased by 7.4 cents per litre to a maximum of 233.0.
