Wanted man arrested in shed after Lower Northfield, N.S., residents told to shelter in place

Richard MacInnis, 44, is wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant for a parole violation.

The Nova Scotia RCMP says it has arrested a man after an emergency alert told Lower Northfield residents to shelter in place Wednesday afternoon.

Police issued the alert about 44-year-old suspect Richard MacInnis around 12:51 p.m. He was wanted on a Canada-wide arrest warrant for an alleged parole violation.

Police say they received information from the public on his whereabouts.

They searched the Lower Northfield area and allegedly found him trying to flee in a wooded area near Northfield Road.

The RCMP contained the area with help from their Emergency Response Team, Bridgewater police, a remotely piloted aircraft, police dogs and air services.

They sent the alert because investigators believed MacInnis may have been armed. Officers at the scene found and seized a machete they believe he was in possession of.

People were asked to lock their doors and windows and stay inside a secure location.

Police say they found MacInnis in a shed and safely arrested him around 2:15 p.m.

“Over the past week, Lunenburg District RCMP and RCMP Halifax Regional Detachment have received multiple reports of break and enters that coincided with MacInnis’ whereabouts,” reads a news release from the force. “As officers gather evidence, investigators would like to hear from you if you have any information, including video surveillance footage or if you’ve been the victim of a break-in that hasn’t been reported.”

Police say their investigations are ongoing and charges are anticipated.
