Halifax lifts parking ban as ticketing declines

Halifax has lifted its overnight parking ban after several days of snow.

Halifax has lifted its parking ban following several days of snow clearing after back-to-back winter storms.

The municipality says the ban was necessary to allow crews and emergency vehicles to navigate narrow residential streets.

“Clearly, residents still require a reminder to get their vehicles off the roads,” said Brynn Budden, Halifax Regional Municipality’s spokesperson. “This is an older city. We have a lot of narrow streets.”

Enforcement peaked on Jan. 26, when 856 tickets were issued and 66 vehicles were towed. That number dropped to 556 tickets and 26 tows on Jan. 27, and fell again on Jan. 28, with 352 tickets and 24 tows.

“There is a section in the Motor Vehicle Act provincially that you can be ticketed or towed at any time if your car is impeding snow clearing efforts,” said Budden.

Despite the ban being lifted, the city warns drivers they can still be ticketed or towed if their vehicles block snow clearing or emergency access.
