The Halifax Regional Municipality is enforcing its overnight winter parking in response to heavy snowfall, said a Sunday news release.

The municipality said the ban will be enforced between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. in Zone 1 – central, and Zone 2 – non-central to allow crews to clear roads and sidewalks.

During the ban vehicles may not be parked on municipal streets. Vehicle can be towed, day or night, any time of year, if they interfere with snow-clearing operations in accordance with the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.

The parking ban is in effect from now until March 31. Residents can stay informed about snow removal operations by signing up at hfxALERT or checking the municipal website.

“Vehicles obstructing a driveway or sidewalk are prone to damage and become dangerous for crews,” said the release. “Such obstacles prevent crews from clearing the sidewalks properly, which can quickly become an accessibility issue for pedestrians, seniors, people with mobility issues and parents pushing strollers.”

“Planters, lawn decorations and any other portable objects near the sidewalk should be removed before the winter,” said the release. “Any permanent structures or objects too big to move should be marked with a reflector that will be visible above the snow to help crews identify obstacles.”

It is against the law to throw snow or pile it on the sidewalk in Halifax according to By-Law S-300.
