Construction of new Yarmouth, N.S., emergency department starts next week

The construction of a new emergency department at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital in Nova Scotia, which will have twice the capacity of the current department, will start next week.

The facility will be able to care for 30 people at a time and provide space for four ambulances, according to a news release from the Nova Scotia government. The new department will also have:

• two triage spaces
• a dedicated ear-nose-throat exam room
• a resuscitation/trauma area
• mental health facilities
• two virtual care exam rooms
• a dedicated kids’ waiting area

The new emergency department will provide health care for people in the Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby counties.

The construction project is valued at $77.8 million and is expected to be complete by 2027.

“Our emergency department team, our patients and our community have been looking forward to work getting started on the Yarmouth Regional Hospital emergency department redevelopment,” said Dr. Joe Gillis, site medical lead with Yarmouth Regional Hospital, in the release. “We will be excited to see boots on the ground and work happening. We are confident it will ultimately allow for better care in a more spacious, modern environment, resulting in an enhanced patient and provider experience.”
