Confirmed hepatitis A case in Bridgewater, N.S.

Nova Scotia Health has confirmed a case of hepatitis A in the Bridgewater area.

The health authority says anyone who ate or drank at Sushi Bay Japanese Cuisine at 450 Lahave St. between March 8 and 28 should monitor themselves for symptoms of hepatitis A.

If someone does experience symptoms, they should contact their primary care provide or their local Public Health office.

Hepatitis A symptoms are typically mild and can include:

• nausea, vomiting or abdominal discomfort
• sudden onset of fever
• loss of appetite
• darkening of urine
• yellowing of the skin or eyes

Hepatitis A illnesses usually last one-to-two weeks but in some cases they can continue for several months. People usually recover without treatment and someone who is infected with hepatitis A may not have any symptoms.

Nova Scotia Health says there is no ongoing transmission of the virus at Sushi Bay and the overall risk to the public is low.
