African Heritage Month kicks off in Halifax

African Heritage Month celebrations are kicking off in Nova Scotia.

The municipal launch of African Heritage Month kicked off in Halifax on Wednesday night.

The event was held inside the Paul O’Regan Hall at the Halifax Central Library at 7 p.m.

Lead organizer Crystal Mulder said the celebration would feature musical performances, refreshments and memories.

“It’s a chance to recognize our history and culture. Most of us are descendants of those who came here in 1782,” said Mulder.

The event was expecting around 200 people and marked the municipality’s 42nd annual African Heritage Month launch.

“There’s Black Nova Scotian heritage. There’s African heritage. The two have mixed and mingled over the years. We’re going to recognize our ancestors with the libation and we’re going to recognize our shared religious history with the opening prayer, because that is all part of Black Nova Scotian culture,” she says.

Dignitaries and community leaders attended the provincial launch in Cherry Brook, N.S., on Tuesday.

The 2026 African Heritage Month poster was unveiled, as well as this year’s theme: “Strength In Unity.”

“This is just the beginning of the year celebrating who we are, why we’re here, and why we will continue to be here,” says Mulder.

An African Heritage Month flag raising will be held at Grande Parade in Halifax on Thursday at 10 a.m.
